Archived Blog, A Legacy from Our "Code 3 Models" Days

21/10/2025

📌 Quick Takeaways ...
  • ❌ The blog you're viewing is no longer updated😔
  • 🕰️ It was actively maintained between 2012–2014, during our Code 3 Models chapter
  • 🏗️ Posts remain live to showcase the quality, process, and attention to detail we brought to client projects then — and still do now
  • 💬 Many of the same clients have stayed with us all the way to Model Up
  • 🔄 Though the name has changed, our passion and craft remain the same

🔄 From Code 3 Models to Model Up
Back in the early 2010s, we were known as Code 3 Models — a name that represented our roots in high-detail, hand-built model making for architectural, product and engineering clients.
🛠️ During that time:
  • We created bespoke scale models for architects, housing developers, and exhibition designers
  • We documented many of those projects here on the blog
  • Each post was crafted to give insight into the process, materials, and problem-solving that went into each build
Our transformation into Model Up came as part of a wider evolution — embracing new technologies, expanding our services, and modernising the brand to reflect the scope of what we now offer.

👥 Clients Who Grew With Us
One of the biggest compliments we’ve received is that many of our Code 3 Models clients are still with us today, as Model Up.
🔁 They’ve returned time and again because:
  • They value our craftsmanship and communication
  • They appreciate our commitment to delivering what’s promised
  • They’ve seen the results of our work in planning meetings, investor pitches, and public exhibitions
The loyalty speaks for itself, and we’re proud that even as we've grown, we’ve never lost that personal touch.

📚 Why We've Kept the Blog Live
Although we no longer update this blog, we’ve chosen to keep it online for three key reasons:
  1. Showcasing Real Projects:
These archived posts give you a glimpse into our model-making style, process and adaptability.
  2. Inspiring Future Clients:
If you’re curious about what it’s like to commission a model with us, these posts help paint a picture.
  3. Documenting Our Journey:
It’s part of our history — and we’re proud of it.
💡 Think of this blog as a legacy portfolio — a behind-the-scenes tour of where we began and what we’re still capable of delivering (only now, even better).

🚀 What Comes Next?
We're now more focused than ever on offering cutting-edge visual models, digital integrations, and multi-sensory exhibits under the Model Up brand.
🧰 Need something built?
We’re always happy to chat through ideas — even if you're not quite sure where to start.

CRASH, BANG, WALLOP!

Colas Crash Cushion

This was a BIG project in every sense of the word. We took a large scale 1:24 scale tipper model and converted it into a rigid crash cushion truck. Additional model components were all scratch built in-house with folding rear light stand and re-moveable deck plates. Model had two functions; to act as a display model in a showroom and also to be used at various road shows with a roadside diorama augmented with road signs, cones and barriers.

Valero commission
2 1:24 scale MAN TGX Tankers.

These Trucks were commissioned to celebrate 50 years since the opening of Pembroke refinery, the site was opened by the Queen Mother in 1964, What we didn't know was that one of these beautiful models was to be presented to the Royal Baby Prince George of Cambridge!

The trucks were treated to the works, decorated in Valero's stylish, clean livery with anniversary roundel celebrating 50 years of the Pembroke refinery. Real conspicuity lines with beautiful lighting kits featuring blue LED ground lighting, bright headlights, tail and brake lights, marker lights and flashing beacons on top of the cabs.

The batteries were discretely hidden away inside the trailers, linked to an On/Off switch. All connected by working miniature suzzies.

The prince's model was presented in a black satin hand made box, the other was treated to a custom sized acrylic case with vinyl base label, it now takes pride of place at Valero's main reception.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had this to say about the model,

Kate: "George loves trucks but i think his dad will play with it more than him."

William: "I think this one will have to be on display in my office."

Tony Wall, Operations ESB -
"Installed the display today at the new visitors center in our Turlough Hill (Wicklow) Generating Station. The Station is celebrating 40 years with much fanfare. The display looks great."

The scale models that make up this unique and stylish display are:
1 x 1:50 Landrover Defender MK1
1 x 1:50 VW van T1
2 x 1:50 Ford Transits
1 x 1:50 Scammell Contractor and Scammell Constructor hauling a 8 axel push-pull bogey with transformer and cable reel load
1 x 1:50 Mercedes Altego Hiab and poles
1 x 1:50 DAF 85 daycab with flatbed with a railway sleeper load
1 x 1:50 VW Transporter T2B
1 x 1:50 Ford F1 Pickup
1 x 1:50 Bedford HA van
1 x 1:50 Ford Popular

Throughout July & August several thousand people will visit.  (The attraction is the station is built inside a mountain).

Tomorrow night 300 VIP’s will attend a musical concert in the vast cavern that leads deep  down into the station.  All will pass through the visitor centre where your work has an excellent place beside the entry/exit door.

A little about the Hydro-electric station:

Turlough Hill, Ireland's only pumped Hydro-electric storage system, will open to the public for tours this Summer. These free tours will mark the 40th anniversary of the commissioning of the station which, set in the exquisite surroundings of the Wicklow mountains, is still today regarded as a massive feat of innovative environmental engineering

Owned and operated by ESB, the station can generate up to 292 megawatts of electricity at times of peak demand and can go from standstill to full capacity in 70 seconds responding almost instantaneously to the country's electricity needs.

11 custom hand built trailers following the Cartwright Ecodeck trailer for APC's annual awards.

TRICKY SCALE LIVERY
Custom hand made trailers in resin with rear door and front bulk head sections following the Cartwright design. This general eco-deck pattern can accommodate the rear door and bulkhead setup of any of the trailer manufacturers.

This is a tricky livery, a red base colour, blue top colour split by a cheat line intersected by two offset lozenges.
